Who I Am: Kelley Iris (she/her)
I am an end-of-life doula and experienced hospice volunteer, passionate about improving the quality of end-of-life care for all people and pets. I am the daughter of parents whose careers intersected with death and dying, giving me at a young age a profound appreciation for the sacredness of being present during illnesses and deaths of those in our communities.
I am also an animal lover, devoted to my pets and all creatures in my community. I have loved and lost pet dogs, cats, birds, and hamsters, and those relationships transformed how I view all living beings - as unique personalities with capacity for joy and connection and who deserve attention to, and minimization of, their fear and pain during life and death.
After a traumatic experience planning and witnessing the death of my beloved, terminally ill cat, Fuzz, I realized that he and I both would have had less fear and more connection to each other in his final moments if I had a pet death doula by my side. I wish I had explored what I needed from those last moments with Fuzz, made a plan in advance, and received encouragement during his dying process to take as much time as I wanted, to say everything, and to hold him, during and after his last breath. Now it is my honor to offer this support to other animals and their loved ones.
I am trained by the International End-of-Life Doula Association (INELDA) and have earned the National End-of-Life Doula Alliance Proficiency Badge. I am also a certified Respecting Choices® Advance Care Planning Facilitator and a commissioned notary with the Commonwealth of Virginia.
I grew up in Arlington, Virginia and I now reside in the suburbs of Richmond with my wife and our two cats. I enjoy growing food and flowers, creating a cozy home, and hosting friends and neighbors in a safe space for everyone to be their authentic selves.
